ON “QUOTES OF THE DAY”

1. “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” 2. “Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine. Do not look at wine when it is red when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end, it bites like a…

ON “GIVE ME A DRINK”

ON “GIVE ME A DRINK”

Some people imagine that God is most glorified when human participation is most excluded. Yet Jesus did not diminish His glory one bit by asking for the help and cooperation of the Samaritan woman (John 4:7-9). As things worked toward accomplishing the divine purpose, the Father and the Son were most glorified in displaying love and goodness to all humanity; taken the Samaritan woman, for example. That’s it!!!

ON “THE WAY FORWARD”

ON “THE WAY FORWARD”

Albert Schweitzer said: “We live in a time when the good faith of peoples is doubted more than ever before. Expressions throwing doubt on the trustworthiness of each other are bandied back and forth.… We cannot continue in this paralysing mistrust. If we want to work our way out of the desperate situation in which we find ourselves, another spirit must enter into the people.… We must approach them in the spirit that we are human beings, all of us,…

1. “You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.” 2. “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” 3. “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.” 4  “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”…

ON “LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR”

ON “LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR”

Bishop Michael Curry once said, “Love God, love your neighbours. And while you are at it, love yourself.” Then, how easy it is to love humanity either as neighbours or otherwise? How do we respond to this statement? – “Everybody needs you, but you need you first. Don’t help everyone else, and forget yourself. Love your neighbours as you love yourself, not instead of yourself.” Overall, Jesus Christ said, “The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’…

ON “TWO COMMUNITIES”

ON “TWO COMMUNITIES”

Craig D. Atwood said: “In Pennsylvania, white Moravians were killed by Native Americans. In Ohio, their Native American brethren were killed by white Americans. In both cases, the martyrs were men, women, and children who tried to follow the way of Christ in a violent and dangerous time, looking past differences in skin colour, language, and customs to call one another brothers and sisters. They were prepared to sacrifice their own lives rather than take the lives of others. While…

1. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” 2. “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath,…

ON “STRENGTH ALONE”

ON “STRENGTH ALONE”

Oh yes, by strength alone, no man can succeed. “By strength shall no man prevail.” Indeed, this is the conclusion Hannah has drawn from the contrast she makes between the righteous and the wicked. God “will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.” (1 Samuel 2:9b). Yes, Hannah’s conclusion recognizes that the lost think they will prevail without God!!! Before conversion, you will realize that you…

ON “NOT BY OUR EFFORTS”

Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt said: “Don’t blow your own horn! If you want to start a big movement, then go ahead and make a big splash; if you want to be renowned, then go ahead and sound off. But if you want to see God’s kingdom advance, stand before the cross and be quiet. God’s kingdom will not come into being by our efforts; only God can bring about his reign.”

1. “But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.” 2. “And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.” 3. “The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.” 4  “The righteous man is rescued from trouble, and it comes on the wicked instead.  So…
