THE DIVINE DISTINCTION BETWEEN NEED AND WANT

THE DIVINE DISTINCTION BETWEEN NEED AND WANT

Friends,

Have you not heard the saying that your need remains your need, and your want is what you want? It is a simple phrase, yet it carries profound spiritual weight. In our walk with God, we often blur the lines between what we genuinely need and what we merely desire.

The Lord knows our needs even before we utter them. Jesus Christ taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” not our daily banquet. He reminds us that God provides what is essential for life, for growth, for salvation. Our needs are met in His grace, in His Timing, and in His Wisdom.

But wants—ah, wants are the whispers of the world. They are not inherently wrong, but they can distract us from the path of righteousness. When we chase after wants, we risk forgetting the sufficiency of God’s Provision. We risk placing our trust in material abundance rather than in the abundance of His Love.

Let us then be a people who discern wisely. Let us bring our needs before the Holy Spirit, trusting He will intercede for us with groanings too deep for words. And let us hold our wants loosely, surrendering them to the will of the Father, who knows what is best for His children. Amen.

JESUS IS LORD
